Noob question, but i have never had to do this before.

 

When replacing the BIOS battery on the motherboard, do you then have to setup the BIOS again? or can you change the battery and keep the settings?

 

Have a PC at the other end of the country that has data on it i need and it has started detecting system battery is low, never had hardware long enough to have this kind of event happen.

Generally you'll lose the settings, it will have the same effect as going into the bios and selecting "apply factory defaults". There are some exceptions to this, but it's afest to assume that is what the outcome will be.

A bios battery going flat will not put your data at risk. ("Fixing" things could if you do something silly.)

Often the worst that happens is the system time is lost.
Sometimes it prevents booting due to incorrect settings.

The bios battery usually only gets used when there is no mains power connected to the machine.
