Can i install ram that is meant for a laptop onto a desktop pc?

the two are completely different, laptop and desktop are two totally different beast.

Just to expand a little - the form factor of the ram is different - the pins / slots physically do not match up.

And just to confuse the matter, my imac (which I consider a 'desktop' computer) takes laptop ram :)

Laptop ram = SODIMM.
About half the physical size of your standard ram.
