i was looking at the different editions of google apps here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Apps

and i can see why auckland uni would want the Education edition for conference room/resource scheduling, but i don't get what the education edition means when it says you can use custom domain names with google apps?

what does a custom domain name do for auckland university? does it mean the student's email addresses will be myname@aucklanduni.gmail.com ?

it means all the email accounts for aucklanduni.ac.nz are handled by gmail, instead of having user@gmail.com addresses they get to use their own user@aucklanduni.ac.nz.

If you signed up for Google Apps using your own domain, you could use say @cranz.net.nz with gmail

so can auckland uni students check their user@aucklanduni.ac.nz email account from home? Do they just go to gmail.com and type in user@aucklanduni.ac.nz and their password?

I'm not sure how it's implemented, but even when I'm logged in to my own Gmail account (i.e. a @gmail.com address), I can still login to my Auckland uni webmail (@aucklanduni.ac.nz) without being logged out of my own Gmail account. They're separate.

And I don't think we can login from gmail.com, as it appears the Auckland uni webmail also uses the university's Single Logon authentication. We login from the original webmail address at http://webmail.ec.auckland.ac.nz/ .

Every UofA student gets a uni student address to use for free, they are added to your courses distribution lists also so tutors/lecturers can easily email the whole class if needs be, or all Stage 2 students in a specific program etc

Career information is also sent through along with anything else that the uni wants to send to a mass list of students.

You can use a personal emai for your course notifications but a lot of the time information is sent to the University address you're supplied with

The concept is same as Windows Live Domains/Mail account. Once you link your domain with Google Apps, you get access to Gmail, Calenders, Docs and also logging in via Gtalk.

Microsoft also has a similar setup for Education called Live@edu
