My brother-in-law currently has a Canon MG6400 series printer which is becoming long in the tooth. It regularly errors to "No Paper" or "can not feed paper". This year I have had to keep opening it up and clean the pinch rollers. He also now has to regularly push/nudge the paper. Needless to say this is frustrating for my 82 year old.

So I am researching in the $100-$200 price range for a new multi-function printer:

Print B&W, Colour & photos
Network capable
Wireless iDevice capable
Duplex printing
Scanner
Copier
Low profile

Consumer.org.nz last review was 2017 and updated 2018 recommend HP ENVY 5530 or 5030 or 5020 and really only one Canon TS5160. All the rest of the Canons they reviewed have very poor ink economy. Also noticed that HP have ENVY 7000 photo series of printers.

Another thing I have found is that manufacturers have mostly done away with individual colour ink cartridges and now use one black and one tri-colour cartridge.

Forum members recommendations and thoughts appreciated.

I've got an OfficeJet Pro 8710 which I really like. The trial cartriges lasted me a year!

These come on special every few weeks for $99 somewhere which is about 1/3 of the normal price.

Ive still not offloaded this: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=77&topicid=240928

Whilst I said it may only be good for parts....its cause I rarely used it and I think the jets may be a little blocked.   A good (self) clean might be all it needs.  And a bunch of ink!

When I did use it, it was great.  Not low profile that you specifiy.  A little slow for the first print but quality was fine.  Even printed photos with it in the past.

Price is still $0!

I went through a number of Canon and Epson inkjet printers. They all lasted 2-3 years before something went wrong and I tossed them out. I have a Brother Laser now - it's no good for photo printing, but it's a great printer / copier.

In general....

Avoid canon
I was a long time canon printer user, now wouldnt touch their inkjets
the amount of ink they waste is insane . I threw away my working canon because of ink wasteage & bought an Epson
My last canon , when I needed to print, would often do cleaning cycles before the 1st print, wasting ink & making me wait to get the single page out.

HP make good printers , but the software.drivers is sometime lousy with no updates .
I have a client with a (then) year old HP allin1 that wouldnt work in 10, would print 1 page then nothing (tried 2 PC's), works OK in 7.

Brother tend to be good workhorses .

Look at cost of inkcarts & how many pages they are good for.
