Hi all,

I was given a 500gb SSD (Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" 500GB SSD SATA3 MZ-76E500B) for Christmas, swapped it in. Now I get "No Display found" on both monitors. The monitors will briefly recognise a pc has been connected, flash up the "No Display found" message and then return to sleep mode.

It was quite dusty so I did brush it out carefully and used compressed air to get rid of most of the dust. So maybe I have knocked something, but I can't see what.

  • No system beeps.
  • Nothing displayed on screen from the pc (aside from no display message).
  • Lights are on, on the motherboard. Including a light stays on all the time on the mobo with a label next to it "SB PWR" is red which may be relevant.

  1. I disconnected all drives. No change.
  2. I removed ram. No change.
  3. I reset ram. No change.
  4. I removed the graphics card. No change.
  5. I tried the motherboard HDMI port. No change.
  6. I’ve checked all power cables. No change.

  • The fans are working, except the rear fan. But I'm not sure if it should be running when the PC is turned on the first time.
  • Graphics card fan working.
  • Fan cooling CPU working.
  • One monitor connected via Display Port, the other connected to HDMI on the card.

My machine (edited list, includes what I think are the relevant details)

  1. ASUS Z97-PRO Gamer Intel Z97 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
  2. Intel Devil's Canyon Core i5 4690K 3.50GHz 6MB LGA1150
  3. Noctua NH-U12S CPU Cooler with NF-F12 PWM
  4. Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1600 CL9
  5. Intel 535 Series 240GB 2.5" 6Gbps NAND Flash SSD OEM (SSDSC2BW240H601)
  6. Swapped in: Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" 500GB SSD SATA3 MZ-76E500B
  7. Gigabyte GV-N970WF3OC-4GD GeForce GTX970 4GB GDDR5 PCI-E3.0
  8. NZXT H440 Mid Tower Case - Razer Special Edition
  9. Power Supply (SSR-550RM)

Google is giving me loads of hits, but disparate and unresolved answers a lot of the time.

Any ideas?

I just posted a reply then saw that you had already tried my suggestions. The only other thing I can think of is to put everything back the way it was just to see what that does. Could this have anything to do with a BIOS/UEFI issue?

So the machine does not POST.

Unplug everything USB. I've had USB devices prevent boot before.

Check all the power plugs on the motherboard.

Consider resetting the bios/uefi. I had an old machine recently fail to post. Thought it was dead, but reset the bios as a "one final thing before it goes in the bin". it POSTed and booted straight away.

Thanks to you both, I will be trying suggestions a little later on and will post results.

One quick question, how do I reset the bios? Is that the battery remove for 5 seconds thing?

Cheers.

There will be a jumper on the motherboard to reset the bios.

Ok thanks, I'll find it in the manual.

If the 'bios reset', 'USB removal' and 'putting the old SSD back in' fails.

Is there anything else?

Unplug all your drives etc.  If you have an onboard video card remove your existing card and try running off that.  Basically get it down to as bare bones as you can and work your way forward.  Unplug the powersupply cables and replug them etc.  Same with RAM.

I really think you should put the old drive back first. Then fix it. Then go from there.

How did you go about copying the HDD to the SSD? Maybe the copy process didn't do the MBR or something that is preventing it from booting.

The "SB PWR" led indicates the machine isn't running, it's asleep.
Does this change when you press the power button? (I think it should)

Maybe check the power button connections as per page 1-30 (page 40) in the manual

Bios reset is page 1-21 (page 31).

A few of you were correct. I simply put the old SSD back in and it booted immediately. So the machine was refusing the boot without the original drive in it.

So I have temporarily removed the HDD storage drive I had in there and added the new 500gb drive, added it in windows and it's usable.

So my question is, how do I now make the new drive the primary drive and install windows 10 on it?

Do I head in to the BIOS and disable something?

Cheers.

Just to clarify:

250gb SSD - original drive, boots up fine off this.

500gb SSD - new drive, I've got it running in the machine now, but really want this one to be primary. I want to install Win10 on it.

2TB HDD - old storage drive, was living in the machine, now vacated to allow the new SSD in to test.

Let's start at the start. What did you with the SSD when you "swapped it in". Did you copy any data?

Absolutely nothing. I went to disk management in windows, disk 0 was unallocated. Created a basic partition.

Copied one file onto it to test it.

So now I have my old SSD as the primary boot device, same as before. New SSD is now D: in my computer. Old HDD is sitting on my desk.

Is this as simple as plugging in the Windows 10 USB stick, reboot and follow prompts to install windows 10 on the new SSD?

A computer will not boot from a blank drive.

Which disk's do you want to eventually have installed?
New SSD?
Old SSD?
Old HDD?

I want to have the following:

New SSD - will become primary boot device, with Windows 10 installed on it. I have a Windows 10 installation USB stick to install it with.

Old HDD - put back in the machine as storage.

Old SSD - sold on trade me.

Current:

Old SSD - primary boot device.

New SSD - secondary drive, nothing on it. Formatted.

Old HDD - sitting on desk looking forlorn.
