A friend approached me with a problem with their NUC running Windows 10.

Every now and then the screen blanks out and no mouse or keyboard motion can bring it back but eventually it returns.

Luckily they have another desktop they can use to RDP to the machine with the blanked screen so it's still running.

I did the usual diagnostics like display sleep, power sleep etc. but they were all turned off. They also changed monitors with no effect.

I then went into the BIOS to look and it blanked out during the BIOS setup so it's not Windows. I could update the BIOS but I wonder if anybody has seen this?

It was working fine for months and then this started to happen. Apart from a BIOS upgrade, the only other area I can guess might be in the monitor connection itself. The NUC has only HDMI out so he's been using a HDMI to VGA adapter which might have gone flaky. I am taking over a HDMI to DVI cable to try out and also suggested that perhaps he buy a new monitor with HDMI native.

Any other suggestions welcome.

Have they changed the video cable?

Edit: I see you are taking a new cable to try - how did it go?

It will be the adapter. I got a couple when I was setting up retropie for someone on an old 17" antique LCD that only had VGA inputs and the small HDMI port powered one had all sorts of issues with blanking out, sometimes deciding that it could only do 480p, other times deciding that 1080p into something that cant take it was a good idea.

Solved the stupid resolution issues by forcing it by editing the boot/config.txt but the brief cut outs still happened.

A different adapter that was much larger and took power from a USB port solved the blanking out issues. Talked to a friend who does a lot of old monitors on new computers and he said that the little ones like I had gave them those problems too.

Thanks. I found a HDMI to DVI cable at home so I am going to try that tomorrow. Will report back. Otherwise it's a new monitor (about time anyway) with HDMI inputs.

Well the cable I had didn't work. It was HDMI to DVI-I not DVI-D since I had used it with a TV. So the blade part of the plug was too wide. Bought a proper HDMI to DVD-D cable and so far, so good.

I guess that's what you get form buying adapters from AliExpress :-(

DVI-I cables can be solved with a big flat screwdriver IME.

Got a link to the one that you have issus with? Mine looks like this one except was more glossy
