So this UPS doesn't really owe me anything as I've had it for about 10 years through many sets of batteries.

I'm getting an overload error if there is a surge or powercut so I'm assuming we're looking at something serious as the batteries were only replaced about a year ago. Any ideas what might be causing the overload error as it even occurs if there is no load on the UPS?

I'm just running my home server and I don't have the budget for an expensive model. Any recommendations in the NZD 1-200 mark?

10 years is a very good run.

I run several SOHO UPS units, but they're all above your price bracket.

Avoid the no-brand cheapies.

I would suggest buying an entry-level UPS from a reliable brand such as APC.

eg APC BE700G-AZ Power Saving Back-UPS ES 8 Outlet $240

Also I'm really after 1000VA. I had issues with a previous 650 VA unit that would overload with power on for my home server, even when it was the only device connected.

Also I'm really after 1000VA. I had issues with a previous 650 VA unit that would overload with power on for my home server, even when it was the only device connected.

I am currently using 5 x APC PSUs, all mid-range, rated 1000 VA or higher.

They vary in age from 2 to 12 years.

All have run perfectly, with battery replacement every 3 years.

They were expensive, but I don't think that they are "overrated".

You will be lucky to find a genuine 1000 VA PSU below $200.

I would go APC over Dynamix & similar generic 'paste your own brand name on this product ' :-)
Ive read horror stories about some of the cheapies .

running a server , need a UPS thats compatible with that server's PSU : eg HP servers dont like the cheapies .

No issues with APC here for smaller sub 1500VA units, everything bigger we have used Eaton, and some of those have been hit and miss.

The APC BX950U-AZ back-UPS could be an option, but APC state that the batteries aren't end user replaceable which is a real pain.

Other options I'm considering are.

Eaton 5E Tower UPS
Dynamix UPSD1200 Defender

The home server is really a glorified desktop motherboard with extra HDs so it doens't have an overly high power draw.

im running a APC Smart-UPS 750VA LCD 230V

its currently running a desktop with 650w power supply, and older i5 2500k, 6 hard drives, and a gtx1060 graphics card. also my VDSL modem, switch, access point, 32in widescreen monitor and home phone. At the moment with the screen off its using 13% of the UPS' output, and with the screen on and cpu maxed its using just shy of 30%. i normally get about 5-6 minutes on the UPS before the PC shuts down, which it does when the battery gets to 70%, and then i get 6-10 hours on the last 70% of the battery for the Modem, switch, AP and home phone.

ive had one issue with it where it would go onto battery and alarmed constantly (was muteable) but turned out the batteries were stuffed and new ones fixed it. they were the original batteries so were about 5-6 years old.

Looks great but at $750 well outside of my budget.
