My brother arrived back from China this week with a set of Stargate DVDs for me. However they won't play on my DVD player nor my PC. Thinking it was a region issue I changed the region on both of my DVD drives on my PC(to region 6 for China) but nothing happens. The DVD burner doesn't do a thing but the CD burner(that can also play DVDs) at least spins the disc a few times with the led flashing.
AND before anyone says beware of cheap chinese dvds they play perfectly on my brothers Singapore purchased Acer laptop which plays Region 4 and 6 discs!!
Any ideas?

Are they actually region encoded?

What dvd player do you have for your TV? Have you tried making it multizone to see if it then plays?

Well I can't tell as it doesn't mention zones anywhere I am just assuming thats the case as it works in my brothers laptop.
My dvd player (Panasonic F65) can only be made multizone by getting a remote from the UK so as thats spending money I'm avoiding that! I've just put a NZ dvd movie in my dvd burner and it played straight away. Since the drives in my PC are 4 to 6 years old (and the dvd player is 5 years old) I'm wondering if a firmware update will help? Its weird that the drives see NO disc in the drive. It does sometimes do this with game discs so maybe a conflict with some copy protection??

Downloaded AnyDVD and generated the following:

"Media is a DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 1

Video DVD (or CD) label: One_tree_hill_4
Media is not CSS protected.
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is region free.

RCE protection not found.

Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!"

Its interesting that its saying media is region free. Why AnyDVD is trying to emulate Region 1 is also curious. I might put a different disc from the set in and see what happens.

Success! As they played on my brothers laptop I copied the files off the disc on there and sent them over the network to my PC and burnt them to DVD. Now they play on my PC AND my DVD player. Yippee!
