Am idly considering the above. The laptop has 8GB on a single stick and I might add another 8GB. I've googled the model and its recommended some Crucial memory.

So the question is, I've seen comments about how memory sticks should be matched and should be as identical as possible, something to do with dual channel memory I think, so how similar do they need to be - do I really need to chuck out the existing memory and buy 16GB or can I just add an extra 8GB of the same spec memory ?

As long as it is the correct spec (2xx pin SODIMM, something like that), it doesn't even need to be the same frequency, but you will find faster memory down-clocked to the lower frequency of the two.

Unless you have a special use case that requires higher frequencies (power user, Ryzen chip etc), just find the cheapest stuff that fits the spec and roughly matches frequency.

Thanks for the info. No special use case. Looks like I'll go for the Crucial memory I was looking at then. Its the same speed as the existing stuff and only 10 bucks more than the cheapest I could find in your list.
