So its Sunday afternoon and am happily sitting here speculating on a PC build I'm unlikely to ever have the money for (unless I accidentally drop the existing PC out the window anyway).

So any thoughts anyone...

Mostly its for ripping / handbraking media and sending it round the house, so some reasonable performance and lots of storage. General home/browsing/light (MS) office use. Not interested in gaming.

Thinking of -

Fractal Design R5 cos its nice and has 2 5.25 bays for BR drives, 8 3.5 drives (have 7 drives at the moment) and 2 ssd spaces - https://www.playtech.co.nz/fractal-design-define-r5-usb3-0-mid-tower-case-black.html?fee=24&fep=12460&utm_source=PriceSpy&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PriceSpy

Asrock x570 Steel Legend cos its got 8 SATAs and apparenently 10 USBs of various descriptions (have got lots of external HDDs as well - https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MBDASR15712/ASRock-X570-Steel-Legend-ATX-Form-Factor-For-AMD-R?qr=pspy&ref=pricespy

Ryzen 3700X for the above board.

Some kind of PCI4 m.2 storage thingy - https://classic.pricespy.co.nz/category.php?k=v2289&o=produkt_pris_inkmoms#rparams=m=s330915491

32GB memory - https://classic.pricespy.co.nz/category.php?m=s330915472&o=produkt_pris_inkmoms#rparams=m=s330915478

Graphics card - no idea, not that important to me, something from here - https://classic.pricespy.co.nz/category.php?k=350&o=produkt_pris_inkmoms#rparams=m=s330915599

PSU - no idea 750W plus ? - https://classic.pricespy.co.nz/category.php?m=s330915503&o=produkt_pris_inkmoms#rparams=m=s330915529

Have lots of HDDs, a Samsumg SSD, Monitor, keyboard.

Adds up to maybe $1800 if I haven't forgotten anything. Maybe $2000 including Windows

Could save a few penny’s with a B450 motherboard and a PCIe 3.0 SSD. The PCIe 4.0 SSD’s don’t really seem to offer much of an advantage for the premier they demand.

True, 3.0 SSD's are pretty much half the price for the same size.

Motherboard, possibly, though I'm convincing myself x570s are more future proofed.

Any weird incompatibilities anywhere maybe ?

B450 boards seem to a take an extra month or so to get that latest BIOS releases but otherwise they're fine for Zen2. Only benefit the x570 brings is PCIe 4.0, but you pay quite a premium for it.

May struggle to find a B450 or X470 board with 8 SATA ports though.
