I'm looking for a new workhorse for work. Got my eye on a Dell OptiPlex 7070 https://www.dell.com/en-nz/work/shop/dell-business-computers-business-desktop-computers/optiplex-7070-small-form-factor-desktop/spd/optiplex-7070-desktop/n014o7070sffnz

Key specs are:

Intel® Core™ i7-9700 (8 Cores/12MB/8T/3.0GHz to 4.7GHz/65W); supports Windows 10/Linux

Windows 10 Pro (64bit) English

Intel® Integrated Graphics

6GB 1x16GB DDR4 2666MHz UDIMM Non-ECC

M.2 512GB PCIe NVMe Class 40 Solid State Drive

I intend to buy a couple of Dell 27 monitors and purchase the stand for the machine to sit in behind the monitor. I do a bit of research and analysis so I need some grunt when required.

Any other suggestions welcome.

AMD have some nice offerings that are cheaper and faster than Intel at the moment, but it's hard to go past Intel for reliability. The Ryzen have a few problems with non-Windows OS's, which are being patched using firmware.

What sort of analysis do you do? Do any programs support CUDA acceleration? If so, well worth getting a graphics card too... 2060, 2070, 2080, etc.

Probably some benefit in going dual channel memory too (2x 8GB DIMMs rather than a single 16GB).

You pay more for an HP Elitedesk but I'd pay the extra every day of the week, twice on Sundays.

In my view, Dell Ultrasharp Monitors are the only Dell worth spending money on.

The only issue Ive had with HP's, is the use of non standard parts (not all HP's though). That can make it a nightmare when out of warranty

Theres zero reason to be using non standard internal power connectors on tower/mini tower PC's .

To be fair we deal almost exclusively with USDT and SFF. Parts for HP EliteDesk, Prodesk are easily found, sometimes we buy another from TM and just tear it apart for spares. Given I feel the useful life of a PC is between 4-5 years, it's rare for us to need spares and it's rare for them to fail inside of that period and outside of warranty.
