Looking for options and recommendations for a new laptop.

I have a Lenovo B50-80 that is about 3 years old.  (https://www.cnet.com/products/lenovo-b50-80-80ew023dus-black-weekly-deal-5th-generation-intel-core-i7-5500u-2-40ghz-1600mhz-4mb/)

What I want is:

  • Core i7 8th or 9th gen, I plan on running VM's
  • 16 or 32 of RAM, I plan on running VM's
  • Large screen 16" or bigger.
  • 256GB SSD or bigger.
  • Quality build is important to me.

I plan on running linux, I am not a gamer so don't need much graphics.

This will be an at home workstation, not taking it places very often so size and weight is not a problem.

Price is not an issue, happy to drop $2500+ for a machine for next three years.

i have seen lots of MSI laptops that look good, but reviews say build quality is rubbish.

If you want good build quality, Lenovo are tanks. Since weight isn't a problem, go for Lenovo IMHO if you can find one with the specs you need.

Have you considered a really compact desktop? Probably both cheaper and faster.
