Ok i have a 1 tb harddrive in my machine that has multiple partitions (c,e,g) on it, I am adding an SSD (500gb) and want to clone the C:\ partion on to the SSD.

The C:\ partition is only 150gb, so i thought it would be easy, but acronis which is the software crucial supplies, seems to hang when i try to select just the C:\

any suggestions?

I don't particularly want to do a reinstall as the PC is exactly how i want it, just a touch sluggish

There other partitions you will need as well not just C:. Try AOMEI clone might be able to do it.

Macrium reflect, used twice now to clone boot drives to different sized SSD's. Takes  little bit of config, but works a treat and is FREE!

I tend to reinstall the operating system fresh, which has benefits of clearing out the crud. Windows 10 doesn't seem as bad as older OS's.

I recently cloned a C: drive to a SSD and it wouldn't boot at all so I used the Macrium bootable rescue media (create this from Macrium) and got it to repair the boot sector. Worked like a charm.

Get the software from the maker of said SSD and install stat. It takes care of firmware updates and has optimize feature which does that

Disables pre-fetch and caching etc as it causes R/W and doesn't need it with the read speeds out of box
