Running Windows 10 with Chrome and uBlock Origin. Lately noticed that more sites are not showing content with uBlock running (Warehouse for example - can view some TV's but not all), and in one case one another site, the Google human verification system was blocked as well.

Are site owners getting sneaky now and putting their images etc on known "ad" hosts, or uBlock lists getting given bad/false entries ?

The thing is so complex I'd say it's the uBlock lists - I don't think The Warehouse would fight against blockers by not showing products they could potentially sell...

Every time I see uBlock it seems to be causing issues. I just use the most common 'AdBlock' addin, this seems to work great.

Use the dev tools to adjust filter?

Click the shield. Open the logger (under power button).

Reload the page. Pink ones are items blocked. You can view more details with spyglass to see the URLs effected and associated rule

It may be that some items have a view-log type function behind them being loaded to keep an eye on what is searched for or start swinging them to top of results?

Are you using any third party lists or just the UO built in lists? (Options -> Filter Lists)

You can also white list a site if you can't be bothered troubleshooting to get the exact filters you need.

If you are going to mess with stuff that the site designers intended, then you have to expect consiquences. One dumb filter I saw would block things that had /ad on the path. Go figure what happened.

These lists are made by people who are not paid, whose audiance are against people getting paid and you expect them to do a good job? Nahh, they are just brute force blocking stuff with no cares given about who it effects or how.

I always thought it would be good to put the nasty terms in a div that got blocked by ad blockers but apparantly that wouldnt be a good idea according to our web guys.

Personally I care about my privacy and security a heck of a lot more I care about someone else's ability to get paid (or your metrics, or analytics, or pretty much anything really). I'll subscribe to or white list sites that are worthy, but they will pry my ability to block your advertising, tracking and JavaScript from my cold dead hands.

Think it might be time to remove uBlock... getting more and more sites not working. Weird... or am I just visiting dodgy sites ;)

It's still the most recommended AdBlocker, I rarely have issues with legit sites not working well with it..

Ever since Adblock lost trust with the whole whitelisting of ‘partner’ or trusted ad providers, ublock has been the only real FOSS addon for adblocking.

I personally haven’t encountered issues on Firefox with ublock on default lists, custom/additional lists might be causing issues. Noscript tends to be the accepted hassle with sites vs ublock.

our work site got blocked by ublock and adblock plus due to a very general rule (our domain name had adcl in it - sort for ad click i think and the rule was *adcl* block )- ublock fix the list in 12 hour after logging a job at https://forums.lanik.us/ , adblock plus fix it after a week. if you log a issue at the site for the warehouse, it most likely will get fixed.

We are seeing this causing issues with all sorts of sites at the moment, messing with formats and making some website elements non operational.

Users don't realise how much impact - not only financial but content and operations - an ad block can cause. Sure, some websites are simple but there are others that have complex logic added as part of the experience.

An anecdote: a maintainer of one of the main lists used by adblockers is a Geekzone user, based here in New Zealand. This user has over the years blocked even very small display elements (since removed from the site) that just showed at the bottom with a link to our colocation/hosting provider. It was a small static image, the last thing on the page, cached on the CDN and long browser cache life. But the crusade against "everything ad" on Geekzone was strong.

I use Ublock Origin and am very glad to have it. I can't stand advertising barrages when I am just passing through a site while searching for something. Sites I get value from, like Geekzone, I am happy to pay for. I appreciate some of the content that the Internet has made possible. Though sometimes abused, the Internet is a modern miracle. I also have no problem in principle with people trying to monetise whatever they publish. Everyone has to make a living and good luck to them. But I do not accept that someone has special privileges to invade my personal space just because they are trying to run a business. If I buy something from you, I am doing you a favour. If you want to sell me something, that does not entitle you to annoy me.

Uh.... i forgot to mention this but everyone is on the same page when we’re discussing uBlock we’re all talking about “uBlock Origin” and not “uBlock”, right?

“uBlock” was the original addon but got taken over by the original submitter, uBlock Origin is the one owned by the actual developer and is the one everyone should be using.
