Hi All

I am sure there are still office 2010 users like me, suddenly when i opened, the banner show up, from oct 2020, there will be no more support on the microsoft office 2010 fro october this year...

is that mean i have to start paying that annual service for the microsoft office 365.....

It means you'll no longer get product and security updates for Office 2010. Which is reason enough to upgrade.

You can keep using your office 2010, they just won’t be updating it?

My 1991 bus still works (as a Motorhome) 29 years later, but I don’t expect the original manufacturers warrantee to still apply, and I do expect some degradation in performance and occasional repair and maintenance costs.

Is that fair or am I being mean (spirited)?

As others have mentioned, you can keep using it after that date - I'm still using Office 97 and that's quite a few years out of standard support.

There will be no security updates is what it means. I doubt there have been many other types of update in 5 years or so. The problem with the standalone versions now is that they are not getting feature updates as Microsoft want you to use O265. As an example, MS released XLOOKUP for Excel but you cannot get it for Office 2019 or earlier.

Personally I use O365 Home and just buy yearly addons when they go on sale at places like Noel Leeming.

Does it even need security updates? Maybe outlook but word and excel don't really need to connect to the internet. The only issue maybe reinstalling it if Microsoft turn off their activation server. But they don't seem to turn them off as the windows XP one still seems to work.
Most office products were fully mature by office 2010 and the newer versions don't contain anymore features than I need. Maybe others need the newer features. I personally don't use the rented software model although apparently windows maybe heading that way. Many Companies that have moved to the SAAS model are making a significant amount of money as over time customers can end up paying significantly more. SAAS also means software company doesn't need to add lots of new features to entice customers to pay and upgrade to a newer version

Yes, Office documents are a very common attack vector as often users won't even think about opening a word / excel document.

Yes, you can stay with Office 2010. Although this will increase your security risk, provided you don't use macros and other advanced features, the impact is nowhere near as bad as using an unsupported version of Windows, i.e. Windows 7.

I am a fan of Office 365 for the regular updates and I would say upgrade if you can. Office 365 doesn't get all problems/bugs fixed resolved but it does get updates more quickly and it does make administration easier. The included 1TB of OneDrive storage is a worthwhile feature too.

However, if you are dependent upon certain old features then you should definitely trial it before upgrading - it can coexist on the same computer with Office 2010. One potential issue is compatibility mode if you use it, i.e. with the document saved in the Word 97-2004 Document (.doc) format.

Personally I never open any word or excel attachment someone sends me anyway, or I do it via googles apps online.
