Hi,

I need to diagnose what has failed in a PC.

The screen locked up and would not respond, I could not shut windows down nor would the reset switch work. Finally I turned the power off.

Now turning the power on it starts for about 1 - 2 seconds and then shuts down.

What is likely to have failed?

Cheers

Most likely the power supply.  Past that it could be the motherboard but I'd definately start by swapping power supplies and seeing if that fixes anything.  I take it all the fans etc work fine?

Could be anything - my suggestion would be grab an already working PC, and start swapping components until your computer boots up.  This is really the only way to diagnose a boot up issue.
