Hopefully this is the right forum to ask. I'm looking at getting a new CPU for my computer. But I need someone to help install it for me when it arrives. I tried once several years ago and bent the pins on the new CPU. Not my proudest moment lol. Which put me off upgrading for a while. Anyone know of any IT services operating under level 2 on the north shore that could help with this?

New CPUs dont have pins - the pins are in the socket on the mainboard :) So very unlikely you'll damage anything ;)

Far as I know the usual players are operating, PBTech, Playtech etc. Obviously they'll charge for it.

Whats the setup you have, and approx location and maybe a friendly geek (with PPE) will be able to do it for you for a drink or two ;)

Very unlikely you'll bend pins when INSTALLING a new CPU .
should require almost zero force & should just drop in , assuming its new CPU
You might bend pins getting an old CPU out, if its stuck to the heatsink.

is the new CPU new or used
does your motherboard support that CPU ? is a bios upgrade needed first ?

Heatsink is trickier than CPU to install (usually) .

Intel CPUs have the pins in the motherboard, so still possible to bend them and potentially harder to fix (also a cheaper component to replace than a CPU).

Re bios upgrade, at least he has a 1700X currently so can use that chip to upgrade bios if needed.

The recommendation for removing the heatsink is to run something somewhat CPU intensive on the computer before turning off the PC and removing the heatsink because that will heat up the thermal compound and make it much easier to remove.

Its pretty certain that a BIOS upgrade will be needed, but for anyone running ryzen they should review new bios versions especially for older chipsets as there were lots of stability updates.

Are you suggesting to warm the CPU before removing the Heatsink to stop the cooler pulling the CPU out of the socket?

IMHO it might help when installing to make sure you actually feel the cpu drop into place, not just that it looks centred. Just thought I'd mention it.
