AMD

  • RX 6800 - 579 USD (874.43 NZD at exchange rate)
  • RX 6800 XT - 649 USD (980.18 NZD at exchange rate)
  • RX 6900 XT - 999 USD (1,508.79 NZD at exchange rate)

NVIDIA

  • RTX 3070 - 499 USD (753.64 USD at exchange rate / 1050-1400 NZD on PBTech)
  • RTX 3080 - 699 USD (1,055.63 USD at exchange rate / 1500-1750 NZD on PBTech)
  • RTX 3090 - 1499 USD (2,263.80 USD at exchange rate / 3300-3600 NZD on PBTech)

Note that the USD prices are more the RRP price mentioned by the GPU manufacturers, and the NZD is a general price range off PBTech.co.nz but I didn't see any reference cards.

But my main question is: how much do people think the AMD cards will be selling for when they become available in NZ? Want to get a general idea of how much money I should save up. Based on the HUGE markups on the NVIDIA cards, maybe I should consider buying from overseas as well or waiting for prices to settle a little.

I'm picking... based on current local nvidia nz pricing.

RX 6800 - about $1335
RX 6800 XT - about $1495
RX 6900 XT - about $2300

Start saving hard.

Gotta remember that the manufacturer SRP in USD excludes taxes .. so in the US you pay this + local and state taxes ontop.

We have 15% GST, so all SRP have to go up by at least 15% before conversion.

Most US prices are well above SRP .. the 3070 EVGA XC3 at PB for $1099 has US SRP of $530 .. so in NZ$ its basically a doubling.

So my best guess;
RX 6800 - 579 USD - $1200 NZD
RX 6800 XT - 649 USD - $1299 NZD
RX 6900 XT - 999 USD - $1999 NZD

RX580 8GB 4eva I guess

People keep justifying these high prices by using the RRP price as the baseline then adding tax's, shipping, profit etc on top but I would bet they are buying these cards alot cheaper than the RRP price.

Is anyone willing to share what a retailers cost price is for the nvidia cards?  I feel like they just have a huge markup to make more profit with their current pricing because people will still buy them.

I am in a position that I can see what the distribution price for Gigabyte and Asus looks like, and I can tell you almost all retailers are under 5% GP on those cards to be competitive. PB tech bring in EVGA so they might be getting closer to 10% for that brand ?!?!? ..

I think freight into NZ is underestimated a lot too ..

Freight to NZ has increased massivly since COVID .. I was airfreighting in laptops for less than $10 ea in Feb and now its at least $70 each

Retailer profits are not a huge part of the cost equation ..

Gone are the days where I purchased my 6700XT for around $600. My only saving grace is that at least it makes the older cards hold their value a bit more so that I can sell it for something.

OT slightly, but is DLSS a software function that AMD can enable? I read the RX6800 isn't really good at it, or doesn't support it, but it's on the todo list? Seems a bit strange?

Anyone have a good not too long or involved article they recommend comparing the 3070 to the RX6800 ?

https://wccftech.com/amd-is-reportedly-working-on-an-nvidia-dlss-cross-platform-alternative/

My understanding is that AMD are planning to release their own version of DLSS at some point in the future.

This could mean an essentially free boost to performance later down the line if buying a new 6000 series now.

Though nVidia have had over a year of consumers using DLSS and improved it big time from it's initial release.

At least nVidia have set the benchmark for DLSS quite high, personally waiting to see what review benchmarks show on the 6800xt and not thinking about the lack of DLSS until direct comparisons are available.

For now, it appears to be an advantage to team green price irrespective if you'd benefit from DLSS. There is no Guarantee that AMD will come up with something comparable in quality or performance.

If AMD was significantly cheaper, then it would probably make sense, but the 3070 and the R6800 (which is as I understand it the competing product) are pretty fairly matched price wise...

It's actually surprising that the RX 6800 is launching with a similar price to the 3070 here as according to AMD's benchmarks, it outperforms the 3070 by a decent margin.  We'll have to wait and see what independent reviews say tomorrow though, but it is looking reasonably compelling if you don't care as much about raytracing performance.

Problem is that the RX6800XT is getting between 3070 and 3080 in RT performance and then DLSS comes and ups team green by 20-40%.

Now if you have no interest whatsoever with RT or using DLSS, likely because the games you like don’t support them then AMD card is good for now. The future scene may change this up though as the new tech starts to get implemented.

There is literally no guarantee that Red team produces DLSS equivalent in this series, or that it performs as well or better though.

The safest bet would be to wait 6 months.

^ This. Wait for the reviews. A DLSS equivalent has been suggested, but so has some Team Red secret sauce for super extra benefits if you have a 5000 series Ryzen CPU and 6000 series Radeon GPU.

If you're talking about SAM then it's not a secret sauce limited to Ryzen/Radeon/Pcie gen 4 mobo combos, Nvidia has said they will enable this for Ampere in the near future with support for pcie 3 and intel chips as well.

Yep. Plus one (speculative) review I read posited that SAM plus the infinity cache/infinity architecture would be more than the sum of the parts sort of stuff. But it is all pie in the sky until the actual reviews come out.
