Hey,

the other night one of my computers seemed to freeze up (Running ubuntu).
now it dosent seem to boot up, yet even post (screen is completely unresponsive).

i have tested GPU and its fine. all hard drives are sweet, and there shouldnt be anything wrong with the motherboard or PSU.
The one piece of hardware i suspect as being faulty is the CPU! its an AMD sempron 2400+ origanilly running at 1.66Ghz but i was over-cloocking it to 1.75Ghz (so it read as an AMD sempron 2500+). it had been over-clocked for around a week and was running fine (all temps seemed to be fine).

Just wanted your opinion on this, whether it is a Cpu problem or something diffrent?!?!? (maybe someone has had this experence?)
Also does frying your CPU affect the motherboard, (does it short circuit or other during the process?!?!?)

and lastly if it was to be a CPU failure would i be better to change to an AMD athlon rather than a sempron?
theres one im feeling pretty good about (AMD athlon 64 3500+)  although i would need to cheak if my motherboard is 64-bit compadable.

the computer is more for me to learn rather than me relying on it for everything so im ready to experiment with any ideas that you may have!

i will post specs later tonite.
thanks for all your input as this forum has been extreamly helpful to me in the past!

cheers

If your board runs a Sempron 2400+ then I cant see it being capable of running a 64bit 3500+.

Post your mobo specs.

hey mate, cheers for the quick reply.
yea i wasnt sure about the processor so thanks for telling me.

mobo is an ASRock K7S41GX

I got a manual off the net, but not sure if its right. it says some odd things.
i remember it saying something about an athlon in the manual, but turned out to be athlon xp processor rather than a 64-bit one.
manual says it supports an athlon xp, and duron processor. funny enough it dosent say anything about sempron so dont know what happened there?!?!

another alternative would just be another sempron.
manual states that it supports socket A (462pins) processors

cheers

I think the Socket A / 462 2800+ Processors might be the best you can hope for on that mobo - maybe the Barton Core 3000+ im not sure.

Athlon XP for a given rating will really kick butt all over a Sempron 8 ways from Sunday for most tasks.

just been giving it a bit of thought, and i might even buy a new mobo as well,
looking on trademe for $30 more than a new sempron, i can grab a dual core processor. it might be a good investment and i was needing to upgrade soon anyway!

also then i can change to ddr2 ram, and a PCI-E vdeo card aswell

well, as i said, after looking at some of the prices it would seem more practical to buy a new mobo aswell and end up with a new processor rather than being stuck with a 1.66ghz, (or a 1.75 Ghz for a week, lol)

fair enough?

cheers for all of your help. has anyone got any good combinations of CPU and processor that are price savy?

Get a cheap AM2 motherboard and a cheap AM2 CPU. If your system is socket A youll enjoy the quietness of the AMD 64 Athlons bring.

Be careful of buying of trademe not only do you not get a warranty, the parts could have been previously overclocked or have issues, but I rarely see anything on trademe as a "great deal" compared to new at pricespy.co.nz

If you really want to try cheap, ask c1com.co.nz or the likes if they have any refurbished motherboards.
