I've been attempting to use a wifi dongle on a PC, but in Device Manager get the message -

This device cannot start. (Code 10)
The USB device returned an invalid serial number string descriptor.

Pointers to remedy would be welcome.

It is purported to be 802.11n capable.

Have you installed the OEM driver or using Windows drivers?

Is this sourced from a reliable supplier or an AliExpress cheap USB device?

It's unlikely you would be seeing that error message without it being a hardware issue. That could be because it's a cheap junk device, or because it's faulty. I suspect your remedy is most likely replacement.

Reminiscing of prolific clone usb serial chipset when they threatened action

Disabled and blacklist the drivers for specific ID and common used SN.

Gives the same err10. Unless you find back dated ones and block the update override.

Tks for replies, and I suspect it was a 'cheapie', although owner says it came off TradeMe (about 2 years ago).

Device Manager says it is from Ralink Technologies (owned by MediaTek, Taiwan although started in Cupertino CA).

I wonder if latest driver/s would help?
