For those that didn’t check which forum I picked, this isn’t a religious discussion.

I have an old laptop that o upgraded to an SSD, and the laptop got wet (sitting in a leaky garage).

I’m trying to decide if the SSD is worth keeping. Anyone got some pointers on how I can decide?

Most SSD's Ive seen are reasonably well sealed. Long as there isnt moisture on the drive, should be ok.

High chance the SSD is fine.  I'd definitely pull it from the laptop and give it a test.  It's likely a 2.5" (laptop hard drive sized) SSD that you can plug into a desktop computer if you have one.  Borrow the power and data connections from your DVD drive if you have one and are confident around doing this.  You can also get a USB-SATA enclosure like this one https://www.jaycar.co.nz/2-5-usb-3-0-sata-hdd-enclosure/p/XC4686 to put the SSD into so you have a reasonably swift portable drive to use.

If your SSD is an M.2 (circuit board a bit larger than your thumb but only a few mm thick) you'll need a different sort of enclosure.

worth keeping for what exactly
what value do you put on your data ?

worth keeping as a spare , for non critical data & NOT used for backups ? then sure , why not.
You'll never know what sort of corrosion may have happened , or may be happening (probhably none)
Used SSD's are dirt cheap. New SSD's are cheap .

Ive put 2 USB MEMORY sticks through the washing machine (left in pocket) . I kept them , they still work. I dont use them for anything important.

You shouldn't depend on any single device for robust storage of critical data, whether it's been through the wash or not ;)

If there's water inside when you opened it chuck it away.

If there's no water inside... Then the risk is up to you.

Is your data worth more than a hundred bucks

Thanks for the responses. I hadn’t given data loss any thought because it’s just an OS drive and everything that matters goes to the cloud.

I think I’ll dig it out and have a play. I have a few spare laptops lying around so not much to lose.
