Does it have fan control? Or has it gotten cold enough that it stops automatically?

Unless it struggles to spin, the fans turning on is perfectly normal? If they’re getting too loud perhaps the thermal paste needs replacing?

If they are struggling to spin then you can always take the fans apart and re-lube them. It takes a bit of disassembly but most gpu fans are like regular ones and have a sticker you peel off at the back.

Don't the fans on that card only come on when the temp is high enough?

What software do you use?

Could use hwinfo64 to check what the temperature is when they turn on. Get an idea as to how random it actually is.

I use MSI Afterburner to adjust fan movement. The fan on my GTX1060 is supposed to turn on when it hits 40c. I changed it to always running at at-least 20% speed.

I have the same card and it sounds like the issue I was having. The fans would go high speed for a few seconds and then back silent again and it seemed to kick in at exactly 50°C. This was a recent thing, past 1-2 months. Cleaning the dust from the machine didn't change anything.

What I found helped was setting the fan curve manually in the ATI software.

Assuming you're using the ATI software and not something else, here's a quick video that shows how to set it to manual:

Then you can adjust the speed and temperatures to suit. I'll screenshot my settings tonight and post here but from memory I have it set to 30% until 55°C and then it ramps up from there. This has basically stopped all fan noise unless gaming.
