Hey All

I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with a friends PC.

They get random BSOD while using windows.

I ran a memtest86+, both sticks failed (both together and then both failed when tested on their own).

I've grabbed a new RAM module today, same issue, errors in memtest86+.

The tests all seem to fail on "Test 7" (often takes 4 or more passes before it fails (4,7,8 passes), so circa 3-4 hours.

I've removed the GFX card so only have SSD and RAM installed, no other addon.s

I've also reset bios to "optimized defaults", same issues.

I've just cleaned out some of the fans and repasted the CPU as well, put in a new CMOS battery (removing power cable led to bios resets), before this post.
Will let another memtest86+ run overnight and hope there is no red in the morning...

CPU: intel i5-4690
MB: Gigabyte Z97MX-Gaming 5 F6 (Considering using the F7.C BIOS per below link)

https://www.tweaktownforum.com/forum/tech-support-from-vendors/gigabyte/28656-gigabyte-latest-beta-bios/page698#post744397

Any ideas appreciated.

Ensured that you are testing with RAM from the QVL at https://download.gigabyte.com/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_ga-z97mx-gaming5.pdf

Tried another power supply?

If the same issue is presenting itself with new sticks consider that the memory controller or the dimm slots are just simply dead. Try the new sticks in a completely different(and known good working machine) to rule out the new set is faulty. If the new set gives no errors then you’re looking at a dead memory controller.

Agreed with this, test the RAM in another PC, if all good motherboard/CPU on your friends PC next suspect.

Thanks, I'll try the new stick in another PC today.

I've also tried again after it failed with a different USB boot drive, and same result.

Ran the ram for 5 hours in another PC with no issues, so assuming its the memory controller or cpu.

Thanks for the help all.

Not common, but corrosion or gunk in a DIMM slot could do this - visual check / clean should pick it up.

When you say random BSOD do you mean it's a different cause each time? Is that what the logs are showing?

DIMM slots look clean and clear, no corrosion or gunk, the RAM also look fine.

I should have been a bit clearer, there doesn't appear to be a particular thing that is being done with the PC when it BSOD, I'll have a look at logs tomorrow.

But given memtest fails with nothing connected, not sure what logs may show, but may be a hidden gem...

But does feel like a new PC/laptop is needed unfortunately.

Logs are a good place to start with a BSOD. Have a play with this tool, it makes life a lot easier when trying to understand Blue Screens. https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html#DownloadLinks

Is the ram running at the correct voltage?
My gaming rig 4 years ago (during initial install + setup) the MB (default settings) was under-volting the Ram (unstable....random reboots)- rig was unstable - noticed ram wasn't at correct voltage - adjusted and ran stable for 4 years.

Upgraded gaming rig MB and chip - ram was compatible. Rig ran stable for a day -but then random reboots started - checked ram voltage - MB default setting was under volting the ram adjusted voltage - rig is rock solid.

RAM has xmp profile has was running at correct voltage, frequency and timings.

bluescreenview found now dumps which is interesting, event log notes errors in creating the dump files...

PC also just randomly freezes, nothing happens, clock stops working, then after a period of time, everything starts working again.

chkdsk comes up fine.

Side thought: check if there is a bios update available.
Also check the ram settings in the bios to make sure no one has had a go at over clocking in the past.

BIOS is latest released version, I may try the beta that updates microcode and notes say better support.

The BIOS been reset to default a few times, then re-enabled the xmp profile.

There are some event logs around nvidia driver issues, but I still get memtest fails when there is no nvidia card installed as well.

mentalinc:

re-enabled the xmp profile.

Do you get the issue with base memory defaults/no overclocking?
Probably means your ram will run super slow, but worth asking.
