Target resolution for the occasional dayz sessions is probably needed for sensible recommendations.

Swap out the 5800x for a 5600x....save some dollars for a future upgrade.

Swap the samsung 980 for a WD 1TB SN850 from bhphoto for $164USD+$11usd shipping.... (258nzd) .... is a beast.

Intel 12th gen being released today too, wait for some reviews on that first?

My only suggestion is to check the motherboard RAM compatibility list and get compatible RAM. I like Samsung SSDs, they've always been reliable for me. I'm not sure the 5800X is worthwhile, 5600X is probably more than enough.]

I like Dark Rock Coolers and fans as they're quiet and effective, but need to come from the US generally. Next build I'd even consider shipping in one of their cases. I like quiet.

Unless they need it urgently maybe wait a month for possible alder lake reviews and also BF sales?

What he said.

The Alder Lake (12th gen) chips are a big lep forward.

You get three steps over the prior generation.

  • Intel's first desktop chips with their latest geometry

    • They go faster
    • They use less power
    • There are more transistore on the chip for more performance features
  • They use DDR5 RAM on supported motherboards

    • Significantly faster then DDR4
  • They are Intel's first chips to use hybrid processore architecture

    • Some cores are optimised for performance
    • Others are optimised for economy.
    • Gives superior single thread performance

Some folks have already got their hands on them but there should be wider availability next week.

At the rate ddr5 will be mainstream you could be waiting a few more months.

Id suggest just getting a 1k used system with something like a 1070/1080 for now and wait till next gen is bedded in and the bugs are sorted.

If you want the best for $3k as of today then yea that PBtech setup will do the job

Yep. See if your friend can hold out for 12th gen. It's a massive leap forward.

Alder Lake will be a big improvement over Rocket Lake, but not so sure it will be such an improvement over Zen3. Alder Lake will probably take the ST crown, but doubt it will challenge AMD in MT.

DDR5 is going to be pricey and wont offer much of a performance uplift over fast DDR4.

I moved from a ten year old CPU i7 2600K to a new Ryzen 5600X. Day to day tasks are a tiny bit faster. Things like video rendering are quite a bit quicker, but they take maybe 1/2 or at best 1/3 the time as before. So the gain in ten years was really not huge for the things I do, that's what ten generations. Gains between generations are largely theoretical except maybe for a few specific workloads. An i5 7X series probably performance about the same as an i5 11x series.

I moved my Ubuntu box from a 2008 Core2 Duo to a Ryzen 7 3700X and the difference was impressive.  There were a number of things where the speed was now so fast that if I blinked, I did not see them happen.  It was a bit disconcerting at first - I found I was looking two or three times to see that whatever it was had actually happened.  And my compile times for the kernel DVB driver set went down to around 10% of previously - no doubt helped along by the ultra-fast WD PCIe 4 NVMe SSD, versus an old SATA SSD.
