For the past few years I have been using AVG Anti-Virus on my desktop & laptop, but now AVG has stopped proving updates for AVG 7.5.

I am now looking for some new Anti-Virus software

I was thinking of upgrading to AVG 8.5, but after what I have heard about the problems people have had with it, I think I will give it a miss for now. (I am trying AVG 8.5 on one of our other computers, which had 7.5, so I will see how it goes)

Any recommendations? (Preferably free Anti-Virus software)

Avast is great. But if you go for AVG, remember we offer 10% discount on AVG plus a 90 day trial (instead of only 30 days).

- I recommend Avira AntiVir for a free AV and Avira AntiVir Premium if you want to buy an AV. It has one of the highest* detection rates : 99.7% and isn't heavy on the system.

- Although NOD32 is good in terms of speed and efficiency, at the end of the day it's the detection rates that matter and it scores 97.6%

- Avast scores 98.2% and it's false positives are higher than Avira.

- AVG is the lowest on the list with just 93%. It's also slower than Avira when it comes to speed, although it has lower false positives.

* (G Data scores 99.8% but it isn't free and it's false positives are considerably higher.)

Used Avast for all my Windows machines and always install it for my friends for a couples years, not problems so far.
Might give Antivir a go in the future though.

IMO performance also need take into consideration and I believe Avast have a integrated internet intruder protection mechanism as well (firewall and worm protection sort).

Thank you for all the comments & recommendations Smile

I have gone with Avast free on my desktop & Avira Antivirus on my laptop.

I stuck AVG 8.5 on to my mum's computer.

^ Really now, on what basis can you say that? In what way is BitDefender better than all other AVs?

If this is why you prefer Bitdefender, I'd rethink the security.

This sounds very wrong. "Windows Defender" is a Microsoft anti-spyware software, not related to bitdefender at all...

I have free 3 month trials of NOD32 if anyone is interested.
