If its showing as unallocated this could be a drive fault.
Try removing the drive from the case and plug it directly into your PC if you can and fingers crossed its just the case causing the problem and not the drive itself.

I'm new here - did you figure out the problem? I have the same issue with my MyBook 250 GB external HD. I have about 175 GB of critical information in there and cannot access it. I am freaking out a little...

Try the chkdsk command in the windows command prompt to scan for errors in the filesystem.

You can read more about it here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265.

And maybe you can tell us how to run chkdsk on an unallocated drive.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Give TestDisk a try.  If your external drive has a corrupt partition table, it may be able to restore it.  Failing that, it can also help you to recover your data before you take such drastic measures as a reformat.
