Hi all,

I'm taking a 4 year old socket 939 computer and upgrading the motherboard/CPU and RAM.
I'm taking the power supply, case, hard drive from the existing setup.

Is it likely that I'll be able to boot this up with the windows XP currently installed on the SATA hard drive?
The drivers etc will be for the original board.

What am I likely to be getting myself in for here?
How would others approach this task?

Cheers!

Motherboard/CPU combo is:

It might boot and it might not - probably hit a BSOD - one choice without reinstalling from scratch is to boot off your XP CD and perform a repair (not the 1st one the XP CD gives but the 2nd)
This usually will get you by.

Personally I prefer to do a full reinstall when changing motherboards, just saves on any potential headaches.

I agree with this.

Do a google search for IDEmerge.

This deletes all the hardware handles in the registry.
I have used it to great success on numerous occasions.
You just run the batch file just before shutdown in the old pc.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I was prepared to do a clean install. I've put the drive in another computer and copied off the my documents folder. Only thing I haven't got by doing this is the emails/contacts from outlook.

The existing XP was an academic version as the owner was a teacher, but I no longer have access to these discs from the school. XP is basically not easily (cheaply) available but there is a vista academic upgrade available, and some with a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out. If need be I'll have to do a clean install of vista which I'd stayed away from until now. Pity Windows 7 hasn't been released yet, or is the trial/beta version pretty stable now?

Anyway i'll try it all first tonight and see if it boots up under the original XP but at the back of my mind now I'm thinking it will get wiped/formatted and loaded with vista if I have any problems.

Im running the RC7100 of Windows 7 at home with no problems (apart from a couple of older games not working).

Id rather run Windows 98 than Vista :-p

Ha, anticlimax! Put all the new gear in and it didn't even boot. The powersupply was an older 20 pin job, so will replace this today with a newer 24 pin PSU and try again.

Yeah I'd rather put XP on as well, though vista is now probably a lot better than it was initially.  The academic vista upgrade pack is not entitled to a free windows 7 upgrade either.

Don't know if it copes with Vista, but Server '03 and XP reinstall nicely with StorageCraft's Shadowprotect product with hardware independent restore.

Very slick, very convenient.

Im pretty sure that you can use any XP key with their appropriate discs if you can borrow one.
Pro OEM
Pro Volume Licence
Pro Retail
Home OEM
Home Retail

I'd imagine the key would work with the pro volume licence disc or the retail disc.
