I have an older desktop that I wish to install a video card in. The motherboard has an AGP slot, but I am having trouble figuring out if it will support a 8x card.

I downloaded a manual for the motherboard (a Microstar MS-7005).  The manual says in one place that the AGP slot is 4x/2x, but in another place that it will take a 4x/8x card.

I queried this with the manufacturer.  They have replied that the AGP slot will only run a 4x card.  I am not sure whether they mean it won't run an 8x card at all, or whether they mean it will only run an 8x at 4x speed.  Requests for further clarification have been ignored.

Can anyone tell me if this slot will support an 8x card?

Most probably your slot won't support an AGP8x card because there were differences in voltages, pin connections etc.

Yesterday I was looking at Video Cards for someone else, and noticed that PB Tech. still have some AGP cards, in particular this one:

which apparently will support both AGP4x and AGP8x slots. It's the only card they have which does this, so it might be worth a try.
