I currently have the Cooler Master eXtreme Power 550. It's supposed to be silent, which it isn't, and it gets pretty hot too. That aside, I've got a Radeon HD5770 which, when running under Windows 7, apparently requires 40 amps on the 12V rails. I've not seen any such requirements in the minimum specs, but that was the advice from the manufacturer when the card refused to behave.
So, the requirements are:

  • Quiet (it's not a HTPC, so doesn't have to be whisper quiet) but hopefully would be an improvement on the Cooler Master

  • 40 amps or near on 12V rail/s

  • ATX 2.x (naturally)

  • Modular is a "nice to have" feature

  • Around the 500-600W - needs to run Phenom II x3 710, a single XFX HD5770, 3 hard drives, a DVD burner, 2 case fans and a couple of USB radio dongles (WiFi and wireless keyboard/mouse).

Would really appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

Good resource here:

I favour Corsair PSU's myself, great quality and very silent in my experience.

Yip, Corsair is definitely an option. The Silent PC Review link above is great, but it is almost impossible to get most of the models they reviewed here. Obviously, the Corsair is there, but I was wondering what other options I might have.

MightyApe is currently selling an OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W for $140.

Has 50A on the 12V (25A per connector, that card takes two. You won't find a PSU that feeds 40A to ONE plug). I have one and the video card itself is louder.

I finally have fibre!  Had to leave the country to get it though.

I think we've got a winner here!
