I just grabbed a 2tb WD green drive from stock to add to our ghost backup server. Noticed this sticker on the front stating something about it being an Advanced format drive, hadnt seen this before so i read the blurb and didnt think it was going to affect us.
Wrong.
What the heck are these drives! for the life of me i cant format this thing, tried the drive alignement tool from WD and it said there was nothing to do as it was ready to go so tried partition magic, acronis disk director, windows 7 disk management, they all see it as a 32mb partition, 32mb not even gb. Tried setting the jumper on pin 7-8, no go. im at a loss as to what to do

Anyone had any experiences with these drives?

As stated its going to be a spare drive in our rapid deployment/ghost server, so dosnt need to be setup for xp or anything, it states on the sticker that if your not using xp you dont need to do anything to the drive, that its good to go.. i beg to differ, what a pain in the proverbial, this should have been a 2 minute job.. grr :)

Heres the page on WD's site about these drives if you havnt bumped into them yet  Linkage

hmmm.. Well that wasnt a good start. Just tried another 2tb green advanced format drive (this time attached as a secondary drive to my work pc). Booted off the acronis align tool disk and it didnt detect the drive, i noticed that it had been detected by the bios on boot however. Ugh. So booted into windows 7 anyway..
It picked up the whole 2tb in disk management.
Seems like the 1st drive is a DOA (or near enough to it). Not a good start WD, dont know about this advanced format shinanagins, why bother!

Samsung has been my favourite drive manufacturer for the last few years.

They have a 2TB "green" drive that is getting good reviews, however from what I understand currently all the 2TB drives from all the drive manufacturer are actually slow "5400rpm" peformance level.

I would look at the Samsung 1.5TB F3 if you want performance rather than power saving, last time I checked it's slightly faster/cooler/quieter than the WD black edition (both/either pwn the green editions in performance).
