Hi,

i noticed that my parent's pc started showing fake virus pop ups and started downloading Paladin antivirus as the 'solution' to solve these pop ups.

After uninstalling palading through the control panel, the pop ups still appeared. I then tried to run spybot but it does not run. I have since then uninstalled and reinstalled that program a few times but it doesnt let the program run even though it shows up as a program in the task managen under processes.

I then logged into safe mode and tried doing it again but the same result was happening. I then downloading Malawarebytes from another pc and transferred it via usb to this pc and the same thing. This wont let me run any antivirus or spyware remover.

I have since then disabled everything via the startup checkbox and the pop ups have disappeared but i still cant run a scan or use any antivirus either. I uninstalled avg and downloaded kaspersky. Same issue. Shows up as installed program but does not run even when u click on it via programs or desktop shortcut.

Kinda at my wits end tring to figure out what to do next!

The pc is running Windows XP

thanks

Have you tried running any web-based scanners? Or checking the running services and killing anything that looks suspicious, and then try to run your anti-spyware tools?

Got another PC you can put the HDD into and clean it from that one ? That way the processes wont be running and hopefully flush it out.

Kaspersky has an option of making a bootable CD with the antivirus.
Have another PC with Kaspersky, run update to get newest virus definitions, make the bootable CD (Windows installation media required)
Boot the problem PC from this CD and run Scan, selecting all partitions on the HDD.
There might be other antivirus products with such functionality.
Hope this will help.

gangstafm, Paladin antivirus comes with TDSS rootkit/trojan that blocks Malwarebytes and other anti-malware software. We had this virus too. Removing TDSS trojans is the key. After removing it you will be able to use Malwarebytes or any other software. Download TDSSKiller too from Kasperky lab:
http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684

Note: trojan blocked exe files in our case so we had to rename tdsskiller.exe to random.com or random.pif I don't remember exactly. Then just read this Paladin Antivirus removal guide or a blog post on how to remove Paladin Antivirus. Both are good read.

Good luck!
