Hi there

I've just joined geekzone and I have a question but not sure which forum to post to.

I have a wireless network running at home with 4 laptops. I am looking for a device that can notify me of Skype messages and emails if I am in another room. e.g. watching TV in the lounge.

I have looked at various devices so far and they all have restrictions of some sort; most probably because I am looking for something up to $350. There are other more expensive devices that will do the trick.

I had an old PDA but had issue with Skype. I also checked out the iPod Touch but it can't multitask, so I have to sign in to Email or Skype each time.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Cheers

mish

The easiest thing might be to have an audible alarm you can hear from anywhere in the house. As most email clients, and skype already support that, you just need to turn the volume up ;)

Ive moved your quesiton to desktop computing for now, we can see how it goes. I will change your subject too.

Perhaps you don't need a "notification" device, but a phone? We reviewed the DualPhone before - it's a normal landline cordless but you can also plug into a router and you have both landline and Skype on the same phone.

No IM or video calls, only voice though. And not sure these are easy to find in New Zealand these days.

I agree, my Nokia N95 has Nokia Messaging Email for my push e-mail notifications, and it has an official Symbian-based Skype client on it. With it connected via WiFi I can get Skype and e-mail notifications wherever I am in the house.

Thanks for the quick replies so far.

Unfortunately, turning the volume up won't help because the house is over 3 levels and there's a baby in the house.. last thing I want is to wake him up - will be in the dog box for ages.

I should've mentioned that I only use Skype for messaging right now and video calls - so I usually get an IM on Skype and head to the office to start my video call.

The Nokia N95 is out of my price range. I considered the Nokia E63, but reviews say that having Skype running in the background all day consumes too much battery power.

The best device I found thus far has been the iPod Touch 8GB because I can surf the web as well if I need to (plus the bonus of MP3 & Video plus extras)... problem is that it can't multitask. I looked into jailbreaking it, but there isn't anything for my model yet.

So stuck for ideas

mish
