Hi everyone,

I am wanting to buy a 24" monitor to connect to my laptop, to have a dual display for photo editing etc (with the laptop screen as the secondary).

Laptop has HDMI or VGA 15 pin outputs.

Monitor has DisplayPort, DVI-D and VGA 15 pin inputs.

So only connections that mate are VGA 14 pin, but this is analog. Will this limit me in any way?

(Res. of monitor is 1920x1200, which I believe the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 graphics card is easily capable of, although I haven't connected any external monitors so can't tell for sure)

I have a similar set-up at work for my laptop just using VGA (analog) cables. Works a treat. Just set up the large screen as the primary and extend the desktop onto the laptop using the display properties (Win XP). I am sure there are similar settings for Vista or Win7 as its a common set-up.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

A HDMI to DVI-D lead should give you a perfect picture.

If I use a HDMI to DVI-D cable, won't that mean that resolution will be limited to 1080 lines? I thought HDMI could only output 1080 lines at the most.

All HDMI can do 1920x1200 at 60p frames per second.

In fact v1.3 can do 2560×1600p75 and 1.4 can do 4096×2160p24 but you won't easily find a monitor that can those resolutions!

I run both 1920x1200 at 60p and 1920x1080 at 60p over HDMI to DVI cables. The only difference is that my PC has DVI outputs and the monitor and TV have HDMI inputs.
