Ok this may be something that everyone already knows about, and I'm sur eit is, but I just found tinyurl and I love it.

I was tired of posting long urls into trademe ads etc and having them broken up onto different lines and looking crap, but now I just put a tinyurl in and it is all good!

Ok, I've had my say. Now tell me everyone has known about this for years :)

You must've been living under a rock to only hear about it now.

I prefer http://bit.ly/

Google also have one http://goo.gl/

I use bit.ly Pro with gkz1.co... For example http://gkz1.co/ebooknz.

And yes, you were living under a rock for a few years now, I guess?

Tiny URL was one of the first shortening servives. There are now probably at least a dozen or so, many of which I'd consider to be far superior.

But it is old news however - I think Tiny URL launched around 8 or 9 years ago.

The only real problem though is the risk of breaking the Internet linking system.

It's ok to use a URL shortner if you are sending a link via Twitter and its 140 characters limit. But anywhere else you should always use the actual long URL.

What happens if Tinyurl decides to stop providing the service? Bit.ly for example uses the .ly TLD for Libya. For example the Libyan registrar took down a URL shortner service because they didn't like one of the link (http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20018772-264.html).

So, be mindful of WHERE you are using those tools.

Well, I havent been living under a rock. I had heard of tinyurl but have never used it till today.

Ok I admit I am probably the last person on the planet to use it but I dont care. Its great.

I will check out the other ones you mentioned too. Any of them have advantages over the other?

Probably wouldn't have this problem at Google eh?

I like the toolbar thing tinyurl has that you click and it creates a tinyurl of whatever page you are looking at. Very handy.

Do any other superior sites have this feature as well?

1/everyone.  Known for years ;-)  Yes, it's the bees knees.  And I still use it.  But choose bit.ly in my Tweetdeck account.  Not sure why.  Maybe I just like the variety :-D

Anytime you are using any other service you risk them closing up, or closing just your account for random reasons.

as you dont pay, you are not their customer, so they have no reason to help you.

I will almost always opt for paid over free for things. Unfortunatly for things like facebook and twitter you have no say in it, URL shortners are just a domain name and a simple database.

imagine if you have 100s of FB posts and tweets with short urls to your content, and then the url shortner decided to put an intersal ad (how do you spell that anyway) between your tweets and your content, but for your competition? You have links out there with your name on it to their domain name, and they can do what they like with incoming visitors.

no thanks.

I have seen it but didn't really realise what it was - until now. Even visiting their website has not instilled in me any great realisation that I desperately need to use this tool. Suffice to say you were not the last.
