Strange one for ya.

  • PC is set to S1 and S3 for ACPI in BIOS

  • PC is set to 'Power Up' on AC return

  • UPS is set to shutdown PC safely on Battery Low.

Bypassing the UPS, if I pull the power on the PC, wait then plug it back in.. the PC starts up (no power button press needed). This is the desired outcome.

Going through the UPS and having it set to 'shutdown the operating system' it safely shuts down the PC, however on Power return, the PC does not start up.  Not what I want.

If I disable 'shutdown the PC' and let the UPS run until it runs out of power (battery discharges.. thus PC shuts off immediatley).. then re-apply power to the UPS, the PC starts up without a power button press.

Any Ideas?  I can't find anything causing this.  Prior to a reformat and reinstall of the OS and UPS control software, it was working as intended (would shutdown PC safely on low batttery and PC would start up when power returned).

UPS is a Fenton PowerPal 660.  Control software is UPSILION 2000 for Windows.  Yep, it's a cheapie UPS.

I have the same issue but figured it was expected behaviour. Why? Well, the PC didn't lose AC power, did it? It had AC power when the UPS instructed it to shut down and then it shut down.

It's no different to turning your PC off, then flicking the power on and off and expecting the PC to power back up. However, you say this used to work?

Actually, I think I have mine set to do whatever it was doing before the power cut so maybe that explains it. I could try setting it to power on, but then everytime the AC is cut and restored, the PC would start right? I'm not sure I want it restarting anytime that happens.

It would always come back on, even if the UPS shut down windows.
Expected behavior since I set bios to power on after ac return.

What worked before, should work now... But doesn't.

I can think of two possible "theories"

1. UPS battery runs out , and even with Mains working again the UPS itself needs to be turned on?

2. UPS battery does not run out and therefore there is no actual change in power state to AC socket on pc, hence BIOS setting wont kick in - as it requires a power out on the socket?

So, in this case, even if the PC is shut down, if you have a power cut and the AC is cut and restored, the PC starts up, is that right?  Sounds weird, but maybe I'll try it.  Sorry I couldn't help you with your problem.

My UPS cuts the power after a few minutes once the PC is shut down (sleep mode) so once the power comes back on, power to the PC is restored so that should work.  I would expect the battery to last a while if the PC is shutdown, so FreakyKiwi is probably onto it.  Did your UPS used to go into sleep mode too and now it doesn't?
