It seems if I change the from field in outlook, it trys to send thru the default account, not the one I have chosen in the dropdown list.

My default account is set up with a non functional SMTP since outlook has this braindead thing where it emails people telling them I deleted their message without reading it and other retarded auto generated emails which I don't want to send.

In the past I have been going in and editing the address of the account to have the address I need to send as in order to have emails go out and get saved in the right mailbox's sent items to match the one that they were received in (I have several catchalls on several domains)

I have forgotten to change it back one time too many.

Is there _any_ way to get an editable from field in outlook that works as one would expect?

if you're using an exchange server then it works fine.... as long as you has 'send as' permissions on the other mailboxes. using smtp/pop/imap i think there is a need to switch identities and its not so easy.

as for "where it emails people telling them I deleted their message without reading it and other retarded auto generated emails which I don't want to send" - outlook usually asks you before initially auto replying to read receipts etc. i tell mine to ignore them. you should be able to change that setting to prevent them.

Braindead? What about Options | Mail | "[ ] Never send a read receipt"?

Sorry, I don't know but this jumped out at me...

Is this standard or something that occurs as a result of something else you have setup?  I'm not aware of my outlook doing anything like this, but could it be?

Read my reply just above yours. The default is to send Read Receipts, if the sender requested it.

The default is to send read receipts?  Not in my experience, maybe "Ask" but at least you get prompted.

Also, is it really true that you can't control this if you're using Exchange?  Read receipts are always sent if requested.  I guess you'd have to talk to the Exchange admin.

Correct, the default is ask, but you can still change to "Never send" from there.

Yes, on an Exchange environment Read Receipts are always sent on request. This is probably for tracking and documenting - a big deal for companies.

negative.  even in an exhcange environment you are asked first.

No exchange involved, just plenty of imap accounts.

Always just seems that editing the from field makes it send with the default account. Can someone with more than one imap/smtp account configured confirm if they are seeing that sort of behavior?

It still sends unread requests out when I have that option unticked. The normal cause that provokes it is when I move mail out of an imap folder on one computer, even with it set to never send read reciepts.

When I last tried to find a fix there were many people with the same issue as me, the easiest solution was to remove SMTP auth details from the default account which is the one that it would use to send them all. Usual cause of them going out was when I selected whole threads of messages I didnt care about and deleted them.

Its outlook 2007 I use.

You have to tick that option.

All the options about processing are unticked, and the dot is beside never send a response.

What is it I need to tick to stop it sending them?

In saying that I quite like having a default account that doesnt send, since it means if I forget to choose an account when clicking a mailto link then I dont send things from the default which may be the totally non-correct one to send from.
