Hi just wondering which drive i should use in my new PC. WD Caviar Black WD1001FALS or Samsung SpinPoint F3 HD103SJ. what are your personal experiences with either or both of these drives?

Im not wanting to do two HDDs in RAID0, im just wanting a single drive for my new computer and am looking for opinions.

Samsung F3 is cheaper, slightly faster and quieter.

Buy a WD black is if you prefer to stick to the WD brand over Samsung but statistically reliability is practically the same across the major hdd manufacturers these days.

I'd disagree reliability is equal across manufacturers.

Saw a survey about a month ago, showing hitachi to be most reliable, seagate least reliable.

Seagates have had awful problems. Especially around 2008/2009.

It's true Seagate had a big firmware bug/issue in 08/09 but really that was a one off event.

The number of drives failing for mechanical reasons are comparable across brands last time I looked at some data.

Any links for that survey showing Hitachi as most reliable?

I have owned only seagates since 2003. I have had one die from a hardware issue and one to the firmware issue in 2009. That is out of my 25 drives. I think the enviroment matters more than the brand these days, but if there is data out there that proves otherwise please feel free to paste a link.

I say WD. That brand never failed me ever since I switched from Seagate

Well Im not sure to be honest but i still have not got my new PC up and running (needs a few more parts) so i cant say if it works good or not lol but i reckon it must be one of the best platter drives out there, the next best thing to a SSD i reckon.

Back's up my earlier statement that the Samsung F3 offers the best mix of price/performance/power/noise, slightly ahead of the WD Black.
