Hi guys. I have been given a computer. basic specs

4gb ram ddr2
2.4ghz quad core intel. unsure of the type. (core 2)
mobo p35 neo ms - 7360
as far as i can see this is the board http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1215

this is what is hapenning i think its a lost cause but im budget and dont have any money to shell out for a new mobo/cpu.

**Sit the computer in the bios set up screen = computer runs as long as you want it to.

**boot to a linux live cd = computer runs as long as you want it to

**Try to install xp = freezes when loading the first part on the blue screen before it asks if you want to repair or continue

**Try to install windows 7 from a dvd or a flash drive reboots shortly after it starts to install files.

** Try to install linux mint from cd as soon as it starts to access the hard drive the computer reboots.

things i have tried

*Differnt hard drive both IDE and Sata = x

*New Ram = x

*New Powersupply = x

*New Graphics card = x

*New Heatsync paste on the CPU = x

*flash the bios = x

*New Optical drive = x

*setbios to defualt = x

only real thing left to try is a new cpu. which i dont have. If you have any ideas please let me know. I was thinking that this board is stuffed anyway so i may try and reflow it, i know it probly wont work but why not give it a shot.

What happens when you try to use the hard drive while using a live linux cd. maybe try copy/pasting a large file or scan the drive and see what happens.

ok it just restarted by its self i just left it doin nothin using linux live cd, and it rebooted. mmmm any thoughts i guess this changes the entire game plan

ok. im wondering if i put a linux version on flash drive just incase it is the IDE controler, would that bypass the area that is being scrwd up? eg. the sata/ide controler?

ok. im running linux mint from a usb drive so efectivly running a linux live cd off the usb drive. i have disconected IDE and Sata drives. got a test file up so if it restarts the text file wont be there and i will know

Ok removed all ide and sata drive. booted linux mint from a usb drive (so efectivly running a live version of linux) after an hour or so of just sitting idle the computer rebooted on its own. i would think that its not the IDE/Sata controler on the Mobo?

I was going to go and get a pci ide controller just to test but i think this has proven that it wont make any differnce.

any other suggestions?

Any body got any thought on it being the cpu or the mobo? it has to be one or the other, do you think reflowing the board would help?

just a bit more info. looking in the bios the processor is intel core 2 quad q6600

cpuid/microcode 06FBh/0B6h

the 0 are zeros

2.4ghz
cache size = 4096kb x 2 ( i think this maybe ram cache im not sure)

bios version v1.10 not sure if this is motherboard i think it is but its listed next to the cpu

FWIW, it's a hell of a lot more common for a motherboard to die than a CPU.

took a looksy thanks for that.

I have turned off the sata and IDE controlers in the bios for the mobo, i am running linux mint from flash drive for the last hour and no restarts. im picking that the controlers were still causing problems even though they had nothing plugged into them.

or option 2 the thermtrip was tripping (which is enabled on this processor). from what i understand if one of the cores over heats it causes the computer to restart in such a state where that core that overheated is isolated. if my understanding of this is wrong please correct me

bios states temp for the processor is around 40c - 50c degrees which i think would be about the correct range maybe a little high? does not seem to shoot up after a restart.

my gut fealing is the sata/ide controllers so i will leave it running until the shops open in the morning if its still going with out a restart i will grab a pci IDE/sata controller and try that. will soon find out when i install win7 as it trips it every time normally.

The computer restarted having the sata and ide controlers disabled in bios. it restarted 3 times within about 30 seconds. the cpu temprature shows 35degrees so thats not to hot. maybe on of the cores is over heating?

i will leave it on the bios setup screen for a few hours and see what happens
its never rebooted doing that but will leave it alot longer

I used the bios to underclock the processor from 2.4ghz to 1.6ghz, and changed the voltages on the ram from auto to the lowest posible i have actually managed to install windows 7 withouth the computer restarting.

anybody have anythoughts on this?

Im going to do some more fidling with the bios settings to see if i can optimize the system a little more without it restarting. im picking that ither the processor ram or mobo is causing power spikes and rebooting the computer.

A note as a side issue does not effect this thread at all. I got with the computer a geforce 8500gt which was overheating and cutting out, the heat sync was getting to hot to touch. so i was using a 8400gs just to get me through the restarts. so i mounted a big arse fan on the 8500gt running with either card very well now.

keeping the 8500gt in there though much better card. still have to tweak those settings though to get max perfomance and no restarts oh yes and it doesnt like the 4gb of ram can only run it on the 2gb im guessing i have to turn up the ram voltage.

Ok solved this one. just had to manually set the ram, cpu and north bridge voltages to the correct settings and its all good to go :)

for some reason the automatic voltages settings did not work
