My Computer is freezing now and then maybe once a week, fully locked up - need to reboot, pressing caps lock does not change indicator light on key board, I am told this is called hard hang.

I could be doing a range of tasks when it happens, ie watching youtube videos, closing an application, but doing the same task again after reboot will not cause a hang, benching with intel burn or 3dmark11 is stable as a rock.
I left computer on over night, and noticed, a recovered from unexpected error screen in the morning, checked the error log, but just a basic Kernel Power message with no details.

Power supply is decent - corsair HX-1000.

rest of machine is
i7 950
X58-UD7
3x2gb ddr3
ocz ssd
3 hdds
Optical drive
6 fans
HD 6950
all at stock, except flashed 6950 with 6970 bios.

I also get more frequent loud popping noises from my speakers (5.1 logitec), even when the computer is turned off, so I'm thinking could this be a power spike issue.
I have got a surge device on the wall but its only a small one.

Do I need to get a decent UPS or better surge protector , any suggestions / comments?

Thank you

Ive seem to have got rid of the freezes, set ram voltage to 1.66, it was on auto (~1.5v), running it at intel spec 1066mhz, the ram is rated at 2000mhz, but Im getting crazy heat overclocking the on die memory controller.

I'm still getting loud pops from the speakers every now and then.

I'm pretty sure this is from dirty power. Seems the wiring in my house is not very good.

Anyway what would be better to clean up my power a bit - a UPS or  8-way surge board?  seems both can be had for around $150.

ps. sorry about the tittle, didn't really put much thought into it as you can see.

Dont confuse UPS with line/power filter - not all basic UPS's offer good power filtering so you will still potentially get the issue but just with a battery - a UPS with dedicated power filter is the one you'd be after but they cost a bit more.

Can you move your computer to a different circuit ? (room) See if you still get the issue.

I checked this, another circuit in the lounge has zero popping noises. Looks like my hot water heater is on the same circuit as the one I use for my computer.

Take the power for your PC AND your water heater off that circuit, run PC power from lounge, and send water cooling for your PC through your water heater.

Free water heating for your home, and your popping noises sorted.

:P
