I'm looking at getting a new 23" monitor but am getting totally confused by so many models and all the mixed reviews. Essentially I've got about $350 in the budget. The Samsungs look pretty good but they're pretty pricey. The LG LED monitors look good value but there is many mixed reviews out there. Anybody bought a new 23" monitor recently?

With your budget of $300 and desire for a 23" (16:9 ratio, 1920x1080 resolution) you are looking at monitors that have TN panels inside.

It's worth noting if you work in graphic design or photography etc and care about more accurate colours you should look at the more expensive VA or IPS panel based monitors.

However, TN panel based monitors are great bang for buck for average users (and gamers).  In the end they are pretty much all the same thing, even so far as many brands are simplt using the exact same panels inside.

I would go with a reliable brand with a good solid warranty like Asus, Viewsonic or LG.

I have two of these Viewsonic's at work, use them all day every work day (programming, development, IT stuff) with no problems:

This Asus looks like good value. a bit cheaper than the Viewsonic's:

LG also has a good reputation thesedays, I have a pair of an older 22" model at home and they have served me well with no problem.  This model has been recommended to me by a few people:

Thanks Ragnor, yes in an ideal world I'd probably like an IPS model, like one of those nice looking Dells but with the prices those start at it just ain't gunna happen. I would like something that represents colour well, and the samsung PX2370 has some great reviews but a little bit pricey for a TN. The LG E2350V looks to be pretty good but isn't super accurate with it's colours, but I'm wondering if a good calibration would fix it?
Ever tried calibrating your monitor?

I got an ASUS 23 inch LED which is very nice, and it was under $300.

It probably doesn't have ht colour accuracy of some, and may not be good for gaming, but it is good for just a general PC, and looks very nice on the desk.

Found a few more dollars in the budget and am thinking I'll try and get a monitor with some reasonably good colour accuracy and the Dell U2311H looks to be pretty good. I didn't bother looking at it much because of the price on Dell.co.nz $699 which is way out there. But I've found it for $569 on computerlounge etc and there is a guy selling one on trademe for $520. He seems to be selling a load of Dell products, all new. Does anybody know what that's about? Do Dell deal through small traders?

Wow, just found that the Dell U2311H costs only $349 in AUS. That equates to approx $434 NZD. Hmmm and Dell NZ sells them for $699. Why must we pay so much more for electronics in NZ? Annoying.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Well I ended up getting a Dell U2311H for a great price, and am very happy with it. I haven't fully got it calibrated yet but it looks great.

Can I please ask where you got it from, and the price you paid?  Also in the market for a monitor but it seems just outside my budget.
