Hi

A friend has asked me to find a replacement CPU fan for his compaq/HP DC7100 but I dont know what type to get him?

I am having a look through a few old desktops I have here but am not sure which type to get?

Can I just replace the fan? what size etc would that need?

Anyone help?

Yes you can replace the fan.
There is the odd chance that the processor inside is socket PLGA478, but most likely its a LGA775.  Can you get your friend to check?

A Stock LGA775 fan, this would be the most compatible in terms of case dimension restrictions, you can find plenty on TradeMe  for example:

Dont forget thermal paste if you do buy a second hand one.

I actually found an old DC7100 here at work (being used unfortunately) but I had a look at it and the CPU fan is on sideways, I mean on its edge. I dont think one of those fans int he listings would fit.

Its a 70mm fan so I assume if I grab one of those I can replace it with that.

Cheers

Sorry I confused myself into thinking you wanted to replace the whole HSF not just the fan.

Good luck with finding a suitable fan, I did a quick search in all the usual retail place but couldn't find 70mm fan, maybe you can tell us where you found one when you do?

'edit ' - just saw this one
