I am avoiding putting Adobe Reader on my system. All I need is reading ability and good indexing. Reader provides more than that and huge updates to go with it.

I started out using Google Chrome, but it is slow loading larger documents & no indexing.

Now I'm using Evince 2.32.0 on Windows, but search is very basic and slow. Also, it lacks navigation using the table of contents. No indexing.

Sumatra (GPL) is fast, but again search is basic. No indexing.

Interested in any opinions on PDF reading.

Excellent, that really does the job. Indexing is fast as.

Was able to opt out of the 'Ask' toolbar and Foxit browser pdf plugins, but setting of my default search to 'Ask' was compulsory. Hopefully it is simple to change later.

You can deselect the 'set as default search'.  You just have to do it before deselecting the 'install Ask toolbar'
