Since installing Symantec Endpoint Protection I am constantly getting the message “traffic has been blocked from this application:  (ntskrnl.exe)”.   There are no documents in the print queue at the time when this message is displayed.
 


  • Symantec Endpoint Protection (Version 11.0.6100.645) installed on a

  • Toshiba Sat4ellite A505 with

  •  Windows7 Home Premium 64-bit Operating System (Version 6.1 – Build 7601: Service Pack 1) and a

  • Realtek RTL8191SE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC


 Endpoint Protection Log File after the message is displayed:

Hi jnjturner,

Sorry to hear you are having problems with SEP, firstly please let me introduce myself - I am one of the product managers for the SEP product here at Symantec.

Can you help me out by confirming a few things?  Is this a managed or unmanged install of SEP?  It looks like its managed based on the fact the logs contain a location of "Block File-Print" but I'd like to confirm.  If it is managed, then this issue probably needs to be routed to your SEP administrator (that may be you, not sure!) or the person you got the package from.

If its unmanaged, then you should be able to configure the file and print rules by clicking the options button next to Network Threat Protection in the client.  From there, click Change Settings, Microsoft Windows Networking tab and you will see the options to allow or block file and printer sharing.

Paul, thanks for the quick reply and info. It is an unmanaged install of SEP.  Currently, the following two options on the Microsoft Windows Networking tab in the Toshiba laptop are already checked:


  • Browse files and printers on the network

  • Share my files and printers with others on the network


My other computer on the LAN is an HP Pavilion laptop running Vista and does not have SEP installed uses (Symantec  Anti-Virus).  However, the error message continues even when the HP laptop is powered down.

thanks for the info.

The piece thats really confusing me is that you appear to be in a location called "Block File-Print"

When you say the client is unmanaged, did you install it direct from the SEP product CD or were you given a package to install by somebody?  If you click Help & Support, then Troubleshooting - what do you see for the Location entry?

In fact, if you are able to post a screenshot of the troubleshooting UI, that would be awesome!

  A friend installed the software after I he cleaned up my laptop that was infected with a virus

ah, yes.. thats not good.

It looks like your friend has installed a managed client, which has a seperate ruleset configured (which you probably cannot change).

If you click Options, Configure Firewall rules - do you see a bunch of rules, and can you change them?

If so, if there one called "Block local file sharing" then can you untick it and click OK?

If you can do that, you are good.. and that should have everything working as expected.

If you can't do any of that, then I'm afraid you are going to have to ask your friend for some help!

Paul -- good news-bad news  (is there any other kind?)
good news -- Yes, I can change the settings on the Configure Firewall Rules page

bad news--"Block local file sharing" is not in the list of items that can be configured!


  • Allow NDISUIO.SYS Driver

  • Allow RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol)

  • Block IPv6 (Ethernet type 0x86dd)

  • Block IPv6 over IPv4 (Teredo) Remote UDP port 3544

  • Allow EAPOL wireless traffic

Aftr you check with your friend, if you are not joined to the domain/corp administering this copy of Endpoint, and decide to uninstall it you should still have a a consumer grade security software.

You can install either the Symantec software or another software. If you plan to purchase software, Symantec is one of the best around. Their latest releases are very nice and clean. If you don't want to buy then you should look into Microsoft Security Essentials (which is free, but doesn't cover as much ground as the Symantec software).

Hi Judy,

You are welcome, sorry we couldn't get you sorted - but when its managed, SEP is designed to prevent these sorts of changes!

As freitasm states, you are probably better off with something more suited to the consumer market, such as Norton Internet Security or Norton 360, which also offers free online backup.  You can generally get good prices on it from the local computer/electronics store.

Failing that, if you are looking for free, Security Essentials is indeed pretty good.
