As the title says.

I'm looking at upgrading my old desktop at home with either an Intel i5 or i7 but I feel i could save a few bucks by going AMD.

So what's the budget for this upgrade and what make/model is your current motherboard?

The reason I ask is that if you have an older motherboard that is not the current socket type and/or doesn't support DDR3 ram and/or and old lower wattage psu you may have to actually get multiple new parts not just a new cpu.

eg: cpu/mobo/ram/psu

something like the AMD Phenom X6 1090T would probably be closest. Not sure if there is an actual equivalent. I would guess anything above Penom X6 955 would be okay as equivalent though

AMD currently aren't as fast as Intel i7, but they're still fast enough for what 99% of people want to do, and they tend to be good value.

Thanx for your replies.

The PC is for general use but I will install a Win XP partition for video editing of Mini DV though when I upgrade the camcorder to HD I will need a CPU that can edit this as well in Win 7 so most likely i7 or equivalent..

Budget for the box is about $1500. I replace the monitor last weekend with a 23" one..
Will do some more research based on the above AMD suggestions.

Look at getting an am3+ motherboard if your going AMD. The new AMD CPUs will hopefully be out soon and they should be fast but still good value.

Wait 7 days for the 8 core Bulldozer FX. It is very close to its release in mid Octobor. To eco Zeon's statement, get a good AM3+ motherboard.

AMD's "Bulldozer" chip is rumored to be on par with the i7 2600K, which is exactly what you are after. But it is still up in the air as to whether or not this is true since current benchmarks can only be considered fake until verified by AMD, which they have not.

They lift the NDA and supposedly release the chip between the 12th and 15th of Octobor. If the chip is what it is rumored to be, it will be an absolute STEAL!

I just bought parts to make a new PC. Motherboard, i7-2600K, 16GB RAM, nVidia 520 video card (low end), decent case, good power supply, DVD, no hard drives, came to $1497. You could cut that down easily enough with a cheaper case and the i5-2500.

AMD could be cheaper though. Waiting a week seems sensible, but new CPUs are always more expensive than existing ones.

AMD will be cheaper than the equivelent performance Intel CPU and you'll get a couple extra cores too, unless Buldozers fails to deliver performance expectations.

FX-8150, not sure how legit this will be until more testing is done, but it is only a tiny bit slower than the i7-2600.

Currently even the top of the line 1100T amd 6 core is not quite as fast as the I5-2500 and they are a similar price.
Although for video encoding more physical cores can help if the program can take advantage of more available threads so a six core would help out handily and keep you humming along fine. Nothing from AMD right now will keep up with the 2600 or 2600k.

As far as I know, benchmarks released prior the the lifting of the NDA are fake or hindered. The chips wouldn't run at full steam without the appropriate BIOS would they?

AMD said that they would not be releasing any benchmarks prior to Bulldozer's release. So I call fake on everything until the release.
PlayTech has placed their order for the chips already. According to them, the NDA is lifted on the 12th of October.

This for me is always a bit of a minefield. I have always tried to balance synthetic benchmarking against "real world" use. Basically meaning what the manufacturers and testers give the processor by way of a numerical score, and how the thing actualy performs when you turn the power on.

I have a modest system, which based on synthetic benchmarks should perform noticeably below that of a friend running an over clocked i5 system, but the reality is different in certain tasks / applications, even ones the i5 should be good at.

My only advice is look honestly at what the comuter is going to be doing most of the time, and work from there. Try not to just pick a model number or two, and look at comparisons until you have that sorted.
