Hi all,

I am sure this is a problem more people have, but I have been looking for an external SMTP server that I can set up on all my hardware (laptop, desktop, iOs device etc) to send e-mail. This to prevent me having to change the SMTP address for example when using a free wifi network, swiching between my own home wifi and 3G networks etc. Too often otherwise my message are blocked because each different ISP only allows a certain relay address.

Anyway, I have been trying JangoSMTP for a while now, but recently quite a few messages have failed. Trying to work through the causes for that, but in the mean time, I wanted to ask if anyone has any other recommendations for external smtp providers or other solutions?

Can I keep using my own e-mail addresses through Gmail (and not change over to ...@gmail.com)?

If the email client lets you enter details just for smtp authentication

I use http://www.AuthSMTP.com . It works from any connection, and my emails are blocked far less often than they used to be. I had to set something up in DNS so that the recipient servers know that email can come from two places, but I forget the name of that technology.

Edit - it might be SPF - Sender Protection Framework.

Who provides your incoming email pop server? They should be able to provide your outgoing server too......

Yes you can.
Setup a free gmail account then you add your other POP email accounts into your gmail account so that it checks and downloads your email from those other email accounts into your gmail Inbox.
You can then setup another email address to be the default send from address so you don't have to start using the @gmail.com address.

Although gmail isn't supported by all clients it seems, as it uses either TLS or SSL - not just straight SMTP.

Mostly affects reporting out of programs rather than full featured email clients though.

Yeah this is the first question I'd ask too.

Should just be a matter of configuring your email client to use your current providers smtp server via TLS or SSL on port 465 or 995 (or whatever ports they have setup).

It's best to avoid straight smtp on port 25 where possible, many ISP's and wifi networks actually block outgoing smtp on port 25 except to their own smtp server over the internet anyway.

I know that, and outlook/thunderbird etc knows that, but some programs don't My UPS monitoring program is I think all I have left of my ISPs email and thats only because it can't deal with gmail.

Nah for me not worth it. I've got it happily working through telecom. Everything else uses gmail.

Be careful with gmails smtp servers.

Whilst they will work, I have found lately that they replace your email address with the gmail address you are using.

You have to set it up in the gmail settings page to send from your normal email address by default, but the person receiving the mail will still get email sent from 'abc@gmail.com on behalf of abc@domainname.com'. Clicking reply will get email back to your domainname.com email address but it can look messy.

Xtra's send.xtra.co.nz works very well on all devices (if you have an xtra account of course). I guess Yahoo would do the same if you signed up for a yahoo account.
