I wonder what is the best program currently to rip a DVD to AVI or M4A...?

i would say it depends on the DVD. Handbrake is a PITA for tv series and animated dvds, in my experience. I've been having better output for animations - e.g. kids doora dvds - using staxrip. with handbrake i always get interlacing artifacts no matter how i've tweaked..

I use Aimersoft DVD Ripper with good success. I paid for a legit copy after free-trialing it first. I think it was worth it because it works well.
