so, I'm looking at new external drives, and I see one comes with 'triple DES'.
one I bought a year ago uses Blowfish 448.
TrueCrypt, of course, offers AES and others at 192 max, but allows several to be used at once

generally speaking, what's the best to use? (my preference is AES + serpent or twofish, but I don't know if I should consider one of these other options)

Yeah, TrueCrypt is best IMO. More important than the strength of your cipher is being able to fool people who can force you to hand over your passkeys into thinking you have nothing on the drive of value. Remember to set up the false partition and put some documents in there ;-)
