Using Windows 7 and XP.
I'm looking for a free programme for backing up purposes. A mirror copy I believe is the right term.

I know this has been discussed here, I've searched, but I get quite confused, and the web page of each programme doesn't always tell you the full story, so first hand experience from the community is valuable.

What I want to do:
  1. Exactly replicate what is in one (simple peer) networked computer A's folder to folders on this machine, B. I believe this is called a mirror, so all deletions etc on A are also done on B. (I get confused about "incremental" and "differential" backups).
  2. Do this every day, or on chosen days, on a schedule.
  3. Each day of the week to be kept to a separate folder on machine B - so Monday's backup would be in one folder, Tuesday's in another etc. Then next Monday can update the existing Monday folder... So I always have a full week's copy of each day.(Yes I also do off-site backup, that's under control)
  4. Be able to choose to not replicate certain folders or files, by both filter and by, say, unticking a box beside that file or folder.
  5. Also backup from a portable USB HDD (and cope with changing drive letters of that HDD)
  6. Don't want compressed backup, though the option would be nice, but definitely need option to NOT compress.
  7. Copy open files.
  8. Shutdown computer on completion.
  9. There may be something else that I can't remember right now!

Found theses so far:
DFIncBackup: here
Comodo backup: here
Genie9: here
Cobian backup: here
easUS Todo Backup Free: here
FreeFileSync: here
Handy Backup: here

Any opinions which is best for me or a better one?

That's not a backup then. If you delete something on A and think "Oh, damn", let's get it from the back, you will find it's not on B either - you say " all deletions etc on A are also done on B.

Well... it's backing up the deletion!! ;)
However the 1 week's worth of "backup" will help with that situation.

That's a lot more work than just using a backup software that will do it automatically. Also, if you lose something on Sunday you either have a week old copy, or nothing at all - both cases are bad.

Try Altaro and it will do all the cycles, everything for you - reduces the risk of losing things dramatically.

Robocopy. Simple, light, fast and free.

I build a batch file consisting of various backup tasks and run it daily on a schedule.

For US$35 you can have Vice Versa, which allows you to Synchronize, backup, replicate your files and folders.

I have been using it to keep a server synchronised for DR purposes. Nice and easy to set up, and it just works.

Tried a few of the free ones, but was not happy with the performance, or reliability.

Or as LookingUp suggested, a robocopy script will definitely do the job. I have a couple running for moving files to a backup server - just be sure to add some logging to the script so you can see that it is actually doing what it is supposed to.

I used Cobian for a number of years. Good for what I needed. Not sure it ticks all of your boxes though. Install it and have a look. It's only going to cost you a few minutes.

I'm a fan of shadow protect desktop edition, and I think it will do what you want.
