Only thing i dont like about Garmin Mobile XT is that it doesnt seem to account for things like motorways.

I just seems to do a shortest distance type calculation.

What about Navmans, anyone got one? Do they take into account motorways rather than shortest distance?

Yep, Navman units do.  You can choose either "fastest" or "shortest" route.

nakedmolerat: hello

can someone explain to me

1. MGMapsCacheNZ (~500MB) - what does it contains? how is it difference with maps from peejayw? I have mgmaps v1.3

2. NZ Street POI.csv - what this file for? i have used mgmaps before and in order to search the street, i never need it before.

thanks a lot.

1. it contains whole nz zooms 0-13, plus main cities at zoom 14-16 hence the larger size.

2. the poi file is for use with garmin mobile xt not mgmaps

In Mobile XT go to Settings, Routing, Routing Preference. You can select Faster Time, Shorter Distance or Off Road.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

Sorry if this has already been posted, search returned nothing.

I downloaded the 500mb map pack and it works really well!

I'd like to add that it is fairly easy to make you own maps (or add to the map pack) using this tool.
Make sure you don't download too much at once or Google might blacklist you for a while.

Theoretically you should just be able to add the files on your memory card and the mgmaps will include them.

Hope that was helpful.

Sorry about that, I seem to have forgotten half the story.
I'll try again from the start:

Go to the Map Creation Tool for MGMaps

Select an area by clicking around it in sequence.
More detailed instructions are on the page itself.

Press "Generate"
Within a few moments you will be prompted to download a ".map" file
Remember its location.

Now download this tool.

Once you have the main window open, under "operating mode" select "MGMaps mode, use a .maps file".
Note the "cache folder" at the top, this is where the tiles will be saved.

Press "Go"
Select the ".map" file you downloaded earlier and click ok.

It will take a while, depending on the area and the zoom levels you selected.

Once the download is done, drop them onto your flash drive. Since there is so many tiles you might want to transfer to the sd card directly, through the phone will take a lot longer.

cheeba23: This thread has the full details on what to do to install these maps onto the N95, check the first 2 pages.

Essentially, you need to install the MGMaps program onto your phone, which I found easiest to do straight from the phone itself (ie using your phone's internal browser and navigating to the MGMaps site)

Then unzip the file from billgates server onto your hard drive for safekeeping, and transfer the contents of the folder to your phone's microSD card. The folder name should be 'MGMapsCache', should be in the root of the memory card, and should also be hidden. Be aware that the files in the zip are already set to extract to a folder called MGMapsCache, so check you haven't got an extra sub-directory level (ie not MGMapsCache\MGMapsCache)

Then fire up the MGMaps application on your phone, go to Settings>Map Browsing and tick the Stored Maps and Offline Mode boxes.

MGMapsCacheNZ.zip is the NZ map file!

It still works fine.

I'd also like to add that I'd be able to provide hosting if needed (have a reseller account with a lot of free space/bandwidth).
