Yep, visited the page, but the Vodafone ROM is not available for my IMEI. And this is a Vodafone i-mate. I've sent an e-mail to their support, let's see what they say.

Well we have been using i-mate for a few months now with varying results. As an email tool and browser for our web based booking system they are great. As a phone pretty average, with drop outs, no msg notifications, no ringing when in service etc. MMS seems to be hopeless. I have just installed the RUU172126WWE_imate upgrade from http://www.carrierdevices.com.au/index.php, but when trying to install the RUU172861WWE_CDL_VodafoneNZ service pack it will not install and everything just hangs.
I will post if the upgrade has improved performance of the device.
I think I would rather have a P900.

I have since then installed the latest upgrade on this i-mate, plus the Vodafone customisation file. It's been working in great shape. I've been using it with Synchrologic to receive always-on e-mail, no problems.

What's the Synchrologic service you mention here?

Have a look on this article for more information. BTW, I have to send you and update on that question about the resellers, but I'm still waiting for Vodafone...

Hi,
I am planning to buy an i-mate pocket pc phone edition from Noel Leeming ('cos I get some corporate discounts). Should I wait for some updates (Windows and ROM) or is the current version "liveable"?

The current version works very well. There's an update available on Club i-mate but it works out of the box quite well. I'd suggest not to worry about this update, unless you have had experience with Pocket PCs before and know how to do it.

Have a read in our article Windows Mobile and e-mail: keeping all up-to-date for some interesting things you can do.

Thanks mate! That gives me some confidence. Do you know if the 1.66 ROM update is already incorporated into the devices that they are currently selling?

Cheers!

You'll have the 1.66 ROM on the device out of the box. I'm currently running 1.72, downloaded from Club i-mate. You have to install the ROM update, and then the Vodafone customisations, also available on the site.

OK cool!
btw, I just called Club i-mate and they told me that 1.72 still had bugs, recommending that I don't install it in its current state. What's your experience?

It's working fine for me, except the ClearType fonts - these are horrible. But there's a dll patch available on XDA-Developers.com for this, so it's all good. I've used this i-mate here in New Zealand and Australia (GPRS roaming) with no problems.

Not yet, but I heard a strong rumour that Vodafone is already testing it here in New Zealand and should be out sometime soon - but don't hold your breath, these tests may take a long time...

So you think we would be able to do a free upgrade to SE after they are done testing? I think for some other devices (Toshiba?) they are allowing a free upgrade.
And My god! This is worse than buying a laptop!! Do you really think that this device along with the software is really stable?
Have a look at the postings in Dubai Pockt PC
http://pocketpcdubai.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x?a=frm&s=553609464&f=539604664
and you probably would get the creeps!
